In a distant year of 1947 Osamu Tezuka accidentally stumbled upon a New Treasure (pun intended) when he first used the decompression in his manga title as means to introduce a cinematic storytelling that further snowballed over the years, crossing borders, and comic book styles as well. Was he aware of the impact the invention is going to have on the comic book industry itself and controversies that followed? It is an interesting question, indeed.
The american comic books did not experiment much with the visual style set forth by Mr. Tezuka until the 90's hit, when it seemed like every gimmick had its fair share of success. As it is with everything in life, decompression found dedicated fans and outspoken resistance to balance its presence. On a personal note, and looking at the style "in a general way", I belong to the naysayers, mainly if it's done in a mainstream comic book where there is a strong notion that its purpose is to stretch out the story, and earn more money for a minimal effort. That being said, well placed, fully thought out, and expertly executed decompression panels could be rewarding, funny and even thought provoking, at times. This is the formula I adhere to when and where I use decompression within the stories of my own. Page No.11, is one of the only two such instances in Twisted Holiday Horror Tales #1. I thought it would be funny to have the street Santa help Ms. Rahmani carry her grocery bags up the stairs. After all, isn't that what Santa does? Rewarding people for good deeds. It all worked out great in my mind. Imagining and writing the silent sequences was easy, but I had my doubts in Trish's ability to convey my vision to a satisfactory level. After I saw her work, I realized my fears were without merits. She delivered in spades. The facial expressions are... Priceless. I hope you truly enjoyed these sample pages from our first issue of Twisted Holiday Horror Tales, and you will be further compelled to check out how the story continues (and ends) in a digital download format via comiXology, available... In other words, those who order the Director's Cut, might have the product in their hands before it's official street date. Sweeet. Thank you in advance for your continued interest and support. These images are of the actual items. Here we see how good fortune changed Ms. Rahmani. Although, there is a room for improvement to the extent of her generosity, she did make a donation after all. Or was that a gesture to get the Street Santa off of her back? What do you think?
This is a very interesting question. I would very much like to hear your take on it. Don't mind Jesus, but what would YOU do if you suddenly came into possession of a small... Or big fortune? I'd like to think everyone would share it with those dear to them, but would their benignant end with that? Would you help a strangers and the so-so friends? The angle is that, they could have/were in position to help you and they didn't? And what if they did... Help you? Will you repay their kindness? Please share your thoughts on the matter in the comment section, and remember, there is no judgment, only my curiosity. It's even better if you have a relating story of a true nature. Page No.10 from the upcoming: "Twisted Holiday Horror Tales" #1 Art / Colors by TRISH ISIDERIO Story / Letters by ATTILA KISS Publisher: SCATTERED COMICS, Inc People complain how Christmas got overly commercialized in the past century, going forward. That is true, but it's also the name of the game. Perhaps to some the meaning of Christmas is a great backstory to shop hard, but just like I don't believe there is a kid out there who haven't heard of Spiderman and how he acquired his powers, there aren't many folks completely clueless to the good work Jesus have done and to the day he was born, either. Think of the Christmas gifts as a necessary hardware upgrade to run the software smoothly for the advanced century. After all, the intent of those gifts are pure. To make someone happy, and there is nothing wrong I can think about that. You might have an argument claiming Santa is more popular than Jesus around Christmas, but when you canvas the calendar throughout the year, I think the Savior is still few points ahead of the "big guy". Shhh... Don't tell that to SantA-iClause, though.
That being said the shopping itself around Christmas is a daunting task I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemies, but... There are few things you can do to make it bearable. Since I used to work at Superstore, I do have few tips to get you through the Holiday shopping a bit faster and a tad easier. Let's say your store opens at 7 AM. (Look for the ones that do open early). Wait for about 30-45 minutes past its opening time, (to miss all the bargain bin hunters), then walk in with full confidence knowing the shelves would be full with merchandise and the check-out lanes empty of shoppers. (Or if you want to join in a nice morning exercise, which consists of fighting for a 30% discount on a dented can of cat food, then be at the door at 6:30 AM sharp, like all your other workout buddies). Between 7:30 and 8 o'clock the shop is at its quietest moments, but do not daydream just yet. Have a list of things you want/need to buy, stick to it and methodically eliminate the items. This is a "get in and leave quickly" kind of situation. Before you leave the premises though, make sure you stop by the cash register or self check-out machines, not to end up on a naughty list or worst... In jail. You don't want that. Nor do I. So, there you have it. This little known shopping strategy is my Christmas present to you. And let me leave you with one final thought, borrowing from a gambling wisdom: "Know Your Limit, Shop Within It". Something I sure, Ms. Rahmani would have appreciated to know before she started filling up her grocery basket. Live and learn. Page No.9 from the upcoming: "Twisted Holiday Horror Tales" #1 Art / Colors by TRISH ISIDERIO Story / Letters by ATTILA KISS Publisher: SCATTERED COMICS, Inc My Father was a huge fan of pulp-fiction. The character he loved above all was "Lun, King Of Midnight" written by Frederick Ashton. As a kid, I would borrowed these books just to get amazed by all the cool, and practical, yet futuristic gadgets Lun invented to fight crime. Unlike James Bond, Lun didn't have the expertise of "Q" to make these gizmos for him. He created them himself. I found those innovations to be amazing. They were ahead of their time, yet believable enough to exist in the future. Given how prolific writer Frederick Ashton was, I had hard time believing he produced so many nail-biting stories plus think of all the devices not invented yet to describe them with exhausting and precise vision. So much that I did some digging on the matter, and what I found out was a great surprise.
While writing these fictitious novels, Frederick Ashton regularly consulted local scientists and scholars about modern technology and scientific advances. In fact many of the tricks we see nowadays in James Bond, Mission Impossible movies, first appeared in the Lun novels. Has to be noted that the James Bond books Ian Fleming wrote, paid minimal tribute to the gimmicks. Ashton was writing about miniature combat devices, appearance changes, underwater machines, and even the "rape drug" before it existed... And all I could come up for my story was a Holographic Credit Card. Well in my defense, my valet is really thick. Don't get any ideas, though. It's only credit cards with minuscule limits. At least the providers could make them smaller. Perhaps the chip should be the only tangible part, that projects a hologram. Oh, and it can be only activated by your calm voice. So, no impulse shopping, whatsoever. It would be nice, right? Page No.8 from the upcoming: "Twisted Holiday Horror Tales" #1 Art / Colors by TRISH ISIDERIO Story / Letters by ATTILA KISS Publisher: SCATTERED COMICS, Inc Isn't it amazing how kids much faster catch on new things, than us old-timers?
You got to admire Ms. Rahmani's cautious approach to their newfound fortune, while Aayushi's excitement is through the roof. Do I sense a generation gap at work between the two? Maybe. Or maybe you just can't teach an old dog new tricks, because the old dog invented those tricks. In any case, we got to see slight differences between the Mother and her daughter. It's a great feeling to know good things happen to good people, and how Aayushi received presents in abundance. Speaking of which, we stepped into October, and that means my birthday is just around the corner. In case you are wondering what would make a great gift to your Friendly Neighborhood Comic Book Creator, wonder no longer, because the answer is very simple: Buy my books. Read them and share your thoughts. It's a win-win situation. Trust me. And you don't even have to leave the comfort of your home. Just click here... or here to fill up your collection. Page No.7 from the upcoming: "Twisted Holiday Horror Tales" #1 Art / Colors by TRISH ISIDERIO Story / Letters by ATTILA KISS Publisher: SCATTERED COMICS, Inc And just like that, the glorious spotlight for Pump-King & His Buddies ends right here.
To use Ms. Rahmani's words: He-He. Better luck next time, guys. As it was hinted last week, the chance to pick up all 4 variant covers of Pump-King & His Buddies #1 in a discounted bundle will also end when their cameo does. Which means September 30th. at exactly 12:00 am a.k.a. midnight, when the deal reverts into a full price and Pump-King turns into a Halloween "thing". (I think). Link? Click. Page No.6 from the upcoming: "Twisted Holiday Horror Tales" #1 Art / Colors by TRISH ISIDERIO Story / Letters by ATTILA KISS Publisher: SCATTERED COMICS, Inc In time before the internet made every information available at the mercy of your fingertips, a small pleasure was derived from watching Hitchcock movies, just to spot his cameos. Of course, the much bigger gratification came from the suspense of his celluloid masterpieces, but getting a glimpse of his presence had it's own delight, to this kid.
First time I noticed him on a film was in the newspaper ad from "Lifeboat" (1944). Ever since, I was glued to the screen to catch his next appearance. There was no compendium of Hitchcock cameos, at least nothing available to me back then. Therefore, it was something I would always look forward to whenever a movie made by the Master of Suspense was listed in the TV-Guide. OMG. TV-Guide! You don't hear that phrase very often these days either. Anyway, perhaps as a node to Alfred, from the early days of the path I chose to entertain others, I wanted to place cameos as a common recurrence in stories I tell. The question was; to whom or what should go the honor? I knew for sure it wasn't going to be me, but beyond that notion, everything else was a mystery for a good while. That is, until I published my first book, which coincidentally was: Pump-King & His Buddies. Naturally, it was up to the walking/talking Halloween fruit and his cohorts to fulfill this role, not only because they paved the road for the rest to come, but because finding an interesting and meaningful placement for an anthropomorphic character within a human story is somewhat a challenge... A challenge I gladly accepted. And just like that, here is the page where Pump-King & His Buddies light up the Holiday spirit. Let me know in the comment section whether they succeeded... Or perhaps I failed? Speaking of which... There are still few remaining copies left of the extremely limited (and now destined to be collectors item) Pump-King & His Buddies #1. As a special offer, to celebrate their newest cameo, I'll be listing the bundle of all 4 variant covers with a 50% off deal, right now... Right here. Note: Covers A & B have a 25 copies limited print, while Covers C & D were only printed in 15 pcs each. All books are hand numbered and never to be reprinted again. The deal will run while supply last or the cameo ends. Whichever comes first. BTW, did you figure out the Pump-King & His Buddies cameos in the Blues Ratz book? That's a doozy, and not an easy one to catch. If you did, feel free to let everyone know your keen detective skills in the comments bellow. Page No.5 from our upcoming: "Twisted Holiday Horror Tales" #1 Art / Colors by TRISH ISIDERIO Story / Letters by ATTILA KISS Publisher: SCATTERED COMICS, Inc First, THANK YOU all for the Likes. The count on the previous post is 29. WOW! I'm happy beyond words. For all the kind folks out there who want to stay up to date with our progress and Like our page. Here is yet another opportunity, If you haven't done it so already. Once again, thanks for the outpour of support. We are previewing Page No.4 from the upcoming "Twisted Holiday Horror Tales" #1, (now, officially beyond the norm of 3 sample pages per issue), and if you hit those LIKE buttons, I will post the preview pages, as if they were going out of style... That's a promise.
With that, let's resume the analysis of our penciled Page No.4. As mentioned earlier, one panel was redrawn by the immensely talented Trish Isiderio, and I asked your opinion as to which frame was the most likely candidate. Although, I didn't receive any public comment on the topic, there was one correct Messenger answer and two apt guesses delivered in person. The answer is Panel No.5 (the last one on the page). For those who keep track of useless statistics, Panel No.5 was actually the 3rd most popular vote. It was two places behind Panel No.3 and No.4, respectively. Interesting. I'm very pleased to see no one thought Panel No.1 and/or Panel No.2 needed a revision. It tells me you've been paying close attention to the story. That tender moment between Ms. Rahmani and her daughter ending with their custom hand move, is as perfect as it comes. So, why did we change Panel No.5? The answer is simple. I felt, Mr. Tolchovsky was not old enough for the intended purpose. Why? Sure, I can tell you the reason right now... Or let the suspense build until next week. Thank you for your continued support, and see you all next week.
