My Father was a huge fan of pulp-fiction. The character he loved above all was "Lun, King Of Midnight" written by Frederick Ashton. As a kid, I would borrowed these books just to get amazed by all the cool, and practical, yet futuristic gadgets Lun invented to fight crime. Unlike James Bond, Lun didn't have the expertise of "Q" to make these gizmos for him. He created them himself. I found those innovations to be amazing. They were ahead of their time, yet believable enough to exist in the future. Given how prolific writer Frederick Ashton was, I had hard time believing he produced so many nail-biting stories plus think of all the devices not invented yet to describe them with exhausting and precise vision. So much that I did some digging on the matter, and what I found out was a great surprise.
While writing these fictitious novels, Frederick Ashton regularly consulted local scientists and scholars about modern technology and scientific advances. In fact many of the tricks we see nowadays in James Bond, Mission Impossible movies, first appeared in the Lun novels. Has to be noted that the James Bond books Ian Fleming wrote, paid minimal tribute to the gimmicks. Ashton was writing about miniature combat devices, appearance changes, underwater machines, and even the "rape drug" before it existed... And all I could come up for my story was a Holographic Credit Card. Well in my defense, my valet is really thick. Don't get any ideas, though. It's only credit cards with minuscule limits. At least the providers could make them smaller. Perhaps the chip should be the only tangible part, that projects a hologram. Oh, and it can be only activated by your calm voice. So, no impulse shopping, whatsoever. It would be nice, right?
