Not doing an all-out review of my 2019 CD purchases, but you can get the perFUNctory assESSment here before I rank my Top 10 list at the end of the year. Sincerely, Thank You for the support.) LUCA SELLITTO – The Voice Within There are lots of Malmsteen wannabees, and few clones too, but not once have I been fooled to believe the master is playing when he wasn't... Until now. Luca Sellitto achieved that... Mind you, with little help from Göran Edman who also sang on a few Malmsteen projects, but more so the style of his playing is uncanny in resemblance to the Viking's fretboard runs. I was expecting a new STAMINA CD (where Luca plays the guitar since its inception), but I'll take his solo project just the same. Crystal Eyes don't rely on gimmicks, and they aren't new band in need of introduction either. What they do is constantly release high quality material. Simple formula I feel more Artists should have figured out by now. On the end, that's all that matters. These guys don't take the production side of their music lightly. Everything is calculated, polished, and balanced to a result they can all be proud of. Piet Sielck of IRON SAVIOR stops by to sing on one track too. TURBOKILL – Vice World The German band's first album has very little to offer in surprises for those who think Heavy Metal reached its peak in the 80's but they do a great job to remind us what made that era tick. Catchy melodies, soaring twin guitar attacks, and song titles that match both, the album and the band's name are all here for your listening pleasure. Beside his own album, he also appeared on his fellow Danish musician's solo release, Mike Tramp (ex-White Lion) "Stray From The Flock". I took note of Søren in the band ELECTRIC GUITARS, plus the latest Glenn Hughes' album, but I wasn't prepared for what I was about to hear on this Instrumental album. It might be a "Guilty Pleasure", but it sure feels good. METAL DE FACTO - Imperium Romanum Since I haven't heard anything from these Finns before, I was afraid Metal De Facto will have hard time to live up to my expectations set forward by Gyula "raise the bar high" Havancsák's striking cover art. However, after hearing the first half of the album, they calmed my concerns with straight forward catchy anthems, accessible on first listen. While the second part of the CD experiments with speed, length, and furnishing of tunes, my diagnosis is clear as a day, these guys suffer from grandeur of EPICVS proportions. And that's not a bad thing, in my book. Not doing an all-out review of my 2019 CD purchases, but you can get the perFUNctory assESSment here, before I rank my Top 10 list at the end of the year. Their sound reminded me of the Di'Anno era Iron Maiden, minus the galloping rhythm section. Most of the titles clock out at, or around the 7 minutes mark, which leaves plenty of room for Diego Schmidhalter to solo over multiple breaks in each song. Speaking of solo's, they are the most innovative ones I heard in 2019. Well thought out, and executed pieces. Melani Hess' powerful yet melodic voice is much appreciated in the whirlpool of symphonic sopranos. Can't believe I haven't heard of Hess before, and the fact that I did, can be accredited to Youtube's sidebar suggestions. At last, someone got the algorithm right. A long standing Spanish answer to Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. While I'm not familiar with the band, I do love and always look forward to his solo releases. You can expect two things from them. Melodies, perhaps mostly associated in Evergreen music with a harder edge, and an impressive list of guest musicians. The term "Too Many Cooks" does not apply here, for everyone is closely following the lead of the master chef Ventura. The result is a fulfilling melodic dish of instrumental music. In case you were wondering about the guests, those versed in Melodic Metal will certainly recognize the names of such greats as: Rudy Sarzo, Mike Lepond, Jimmy Waldo, Toni Franklin, and Phil Sousan, while guitar enthusiast will swear they heard the names of: Stuart Hamm, Michael Angelo Batio, Joey Tafolla, Kiko Loureiro, and Jennifer Batten somewhere. For those who care, beside the original tunes, Paco and his friends play a great tribute to A-Ha's "Take On Me", as well. In this genre, this year, he is the one that stood out to me. His voice is powerful, melodic, and custom made for Progressive Metal, a sub-genre I rarely flock to. |
